The “O&O mdc” IOL Tumble Polishing Barrels
Some good reasons for choosing the IOL Tumble Polishing Barrels:
- The Tumble Polishing Barrels are handmade from SCHOTT®DURAN®glass – a material specifically designed for Laboratory and Pharmaceutical equipment.
- The"RODAVISS™" patented inner and outer tapered ground system forms a leak‐proof seal which ensures that the beads, the polishing solution and the IOLs are constantly well preserved during polishing.
- The barrels have an extra large opening which makes them very user‐friendly.
- The hexagonal barrels create waves of beads which greatly increase the efficiency of the tumble polishing.
- The bottom of the barrel and the inner cap are convex, specifically designed to direct the solution and its content back to the centre of the barrel.
- The Tumble Polishing Barrels for rotary machines are available in 650 ml and 1 litre capacities, thereby allowing as few as 40 IOLs and as many as 400 IOLs to be polished simultaneously.
- For Turbula machines Barrels are available in 650ml, allowing as many as 90 IOLs to be polished together.
- Rolling Hexagonal barrels can be stacked, making for easy, safe storage.
- They are particularly efficient for use with PMMA, Poly‐HEMA, Silicone and Hydrophobic materials.
The "O&Omdc" Tumbling Barrels are easy to use, easy to take apart, easy to clean and easy to maintain. Also, thanks to our innovative design, not only will our barrels increase your polishing accuracy – they will significantly reduce your polishing time too.

Using the “O&O ” Glass Tumbling Barrels:
Particular care, should be taken when loading and unloading the lenses. A little practice might be needed to avoid over-tightening the seal so that the glass thread is not damaged on re-opening.
To close the hexagonal barrel
- Ensure that there are no glass beads on the convex area of the cap (A).
- Verify that there are no glass beads on the inner and outer ground area (B and C).
- Screw the Delrin® cap on to the barrel until the inner glass portion of the cap stops.
- Twist half to one full turn more, to ensure a leak‐proof seal.
- Place the barrel on the polishing machine and make sure that there is no leakage. If there is any seepage, tighten the cap by another quarter turn.
To open the barrel
- Unscrew the cap and wipe off all remaining glass beads on the convex area of the cap (A) and on the inner and outer ground areas (B and C) before inspecting your lenses.

Running-in period for a new barrel:
After manufacture, remaining oxidation or surface modification of the DURAN® glass may,
for a short while, cause lens contamination.
Therefore a "running‐in" period is necessary (usually a week to ten days).
For "running‐in" use glass or beads that are expressly for this purpose, adding DI water and Tween 80.
Tumbling Polishing Methods:
Several polishing methods are available on request for Intraocular Lenses.
The most commonly used are the following:
- PMMA Intraocular Lenses can be polished in three days using a compound made of clear IOL quality glass beads (3 sizes), DI water mixed with Tween 80, Al2O3, NaOH.
- Soft Acrylic Hydrophilic Intraocular Lenses can be polished in less than three days using a compound made from treated glass beads (3 sizes), DI water mixed with Tween 80.
- Soft Acrylic Hydrophilic Intraocular Lenses can be dry polished in two days using a compound made of clear IOL quality glass beads (3 sizes), Al2O3, and a non hydrating solution.
- Soft Acrylic Hydrophobic Intraocular Lenses can be polished in one to two days using a compound made of clear IOL quality zirconium beads (3 sizes), DI water, NaCl, Al2O3 and surfactant.
Glass and Zirconium beads are available from SIGMUND LINDER GmbH:
The glass beads used are SiLibeads® Type S: Ask for special IOL preparation clear beads The zirconium beads used are SiLibeads® Type ZS or SiLibeads® Type ZY
